 Ismail Haniyeh:  A Life of Resistance and Leadership Early Life and Education (1963-1980) Ismail Abdul Salam Ahmed Haniyeh was born on January 29, 1963, in the Al-Shati refugee camp in Gaza City, Gaza Strip. His family had been displaced from their home in Majdal, a town in what is now southern Israel, during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Haniyeh grew up in a devout Muslim family and was raised with strong nationalist sentiments. Haniyeh received his primary education in Gaza and later attended the Islamic University of Gaza, where he studied Arabic literature. During his university years, he became involved in student politics and joined the Palestinian Muslim Brotherhood, the precursor to Hamas.
