 Ismail Haniyeh:  A Life of Resistance and Leadership Early Life and Education (1963-1980) Ismail Abdul Salam Ahmed Haniyeh was born on January 29, 1963, in the Al-Shati refugee camp in Gaza City, Gaza Strip. His family had been displaced from their home in Majdal, a town in what is now southern Israel, during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Haniyeh grew up in a devout Muslim family and was raised with strong nationalist sentiments.
